What is a data breach?

My name is Tim Peter and I’m an attorney at Faruqi & Faruqi.

A data breach is the leak or theft of information from a company or governmental agency’s digital records. This often occurs because of the company or the government’s inadequate data security, and can lead to very serious issues such as identity theft, fraudulent charges, and loss of money and time. On average, 4,168 records are stolen every minute. In 2018, the 10 largest breaches resulted in the theft of approximately 3.6 billion records.
